As the UK lockdown is extended, we are all now past the point of getting the infills on our gel polish done. Many of us can see significant regrowth, whilst many will also be experiencing some lifting or breakages.

As much as we might not want to, it’s time to take that gel polish off!

It can be very tempting to pick at gel polish or even chew it off, but this is never a good idea. This leaves behind significant damage to the nail plate, which can make your nails weak, thin and prone to breakages. By removing them properly you can avoid this damage and keep your nails looking healthy and natural.

Semilac has a wonderful range of products to help you remove your gel polish at home whilst protecting your nails. All you need to get started is:

To start with, you will need to make sure that you have protected your surfaces in case of spillages. Putting a towel down can help to collect any dust. Get all your products ready and close to hand to make the process as easy as possible.

Step 1

The first stage requires you to remove the shiny surface of the polish using a Semilac Sanding Block Buffer. This breaks the seal of the polish up and allows the Remover to penetrate it more effectively. Move the buffer from side to side across the nail, taking care not to scratch the cuticles or surrounding skin. You are only creating a rough surface, not removing the gel, so be gentle.

Step 2

You need to protect the skin around your nail by using your cuticle oil. Simply apply a small amount of the oil to the base of each nail and let it do its thing!

Step 3

Now comes the removal process! Soak the Semilac Remover Wraps in Semilac Remover and place them onto the nail. Then wrap the foil firmly around the finger and fold down the top to secure it. You now need to leave the Remover to work for 10 minutes, so pour a coffee and flick through a magazine.

When your 10 minutes is up, simply unfold the foil and remove the wraps.

Step 4

You will now need to carefully file the nail down. Use the bevelled end of your wooden stick to gently lift the gel polish away from the nail. Start at the bottom of the nail where you see the regrowth and work upwards towards the free edge. The gel polish should come away easily, so take care not to force it or you will damage the nail.

Once the gel polish has been removed from each nail, gently buff the nails again and sweep away any dust from your fingers and surrounding surfaces.

Step 5

Finally, give your hands and nails a little tender loving care by applying some more cuticle oil and a moisturiser. You can now show off beautiful nails that are healthy and perfect for repainting or embracing the natural look.

Once your nails have been safely removed, all you have to do is decide what to do with them next! All of the products mentioned above are available to order now from our website.
